McDonald's Corp. operates one of the largest restaurant chains in the world, with more than 39,000 company-owned and franchised properties in more than 100 countries serving more than 63 million customers a day. Approximately 93% of its restaurants are owned and operated by independent owners.[1]
Based in Chicago, Illinois, the company dates back to 1940, when two brothers, Dick and Mac McDonald, opened a drive-in restaurant in San Bernardino, California, serving only hamburgers (15 cents at the time), shakes and French fries. The brothers were eventually bought out by Ray Kroc, a milkshake machine salesman, who grew the business into the omnipresent worldwide chain it is today.[2]
The company's ticker symbol is MCD, and it had a market cap of about US$174 billion in April 2021.[3] For full-year 2020, the company reported net income of US$4.7 billion, down 21% from US$6.0 billion in 2019, as revenue fell 10% to US$19.2 billion from US$21.3 billion, largely due to closures and restrictions tied to the COVID-19 pandemic.[1]
