Barclays is a large London-based commercial bank, and it was founded in 1690 by two goldsmith bankers. In 1736 James Barclay was taken on as a partner, from whence the company takes its name. In addition to Barclays UK, the bank does business in many other countries through Barclays International. The bank is a large international credit card issuer and also offers a wide variety of retail, commercial, investment banking and securities services.[1]
In full-year 2020, the bank earned net income of £2.5 billion, down 27% from £3.4 billion in 2019. The decrease was largely due to an increase in credit impairment charges to £4.8 billion from £1.9 billion, mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Revenue was basically flat at £21.8 billion, versus £21.6 billion in 2019.[2] The Barclays ticker symbol is BARC.
